FIlms I'm Anticipating

With 2009 coughing up two great films already in Slumdog Millionaire and The Wrestler. There are a few films set to be released later this year and beyond that have caught my two eyes.

Invention of Lying a.k.a This Side of the Truth

IMDb has just informed me of the name change to Ricky Gervais' big screen directorial debut. Starring folks such as, Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill, Gervais himself, Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Rob Lowe, Patrick Stewart and Christopher Guest, you can't doubt that it will be very hilarious. Everything Gervais has written and directed himself up to this point has been quality, hence this should be a winner. Thumbs up from me.

S. Darko, sequel to cult hit Donnie Darko is out later this year. Curiosity more than anything will bring me to the pictures to watch this bad boy. As a fan of Donnie Darko, I expect to be disappointed, but can't risk missing out if it is any good.

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek is a guarenteed box office smash, which I will probably go and see due to my desire to fit in. Afterwards I can say stuff like "Abrams is a genius" just like I did after Cloverfield even though I thought it was average. Speaking of remakes: a new Sherlock Holmes film is due out November this year, starring the usually excellent Robert Downey Jr and directed by the usually shit Guy Ritchie, but if it's good we can blame Madonna for Swept Away.

Funny People is the next Judd Apatow comedy starring Adam Sandler and the usual suspects (Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill). I think it's about cancer or something, which is always good for them old punchlines. Monsters vs Aliens is one of them animated things, which looks like it might be quite good - Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie, Paul Rudd, Jack Bauer and Reese Witherspoon are all voice acting, that's good innit?
